The imperative to give to the society and help those with genuine needs has become one of the focuses of the Jericho Businessmen Club. Hence at the Club’s Ordinary General Meeting of October 26, 2006, the JBC Scholarship Scheme was established and a committee was inaugurated to actualise the objectives of the club in this regard. The committee developed the broad policy framework for the scheme and made presentations to the entire members, establishing an inescapable need to fund the scheme. The uniqueness of this scheme is that once a student (scholar) is considered suitable for the scholarship, the club maintains the scholar throughout his/her undergraduate studies. In order to ensure continuity without unduly over-burdening the members, a Fund, “The JBC Scholarship Fund” was thus created with donations received from JBC members.
The Beginning
An Advertisement was placed in Punch Newspaper of July 26, 2007 requesting for applications from students that were in good academic standing but with genuine financial needs. We received over 1,500 application in two weeks and thus begun the process of selection. Interviews were conducted for the long listed applicants from where a shortlist of 20 was made. This was further reduced to 10 based on the peculiarities of each candidates and independent confirmation of financial needs.
